Anthony E Johnson, MD
Orthopedic Sports Medicine Surgeon
Anthony “AJ” Johnson, MD, FACS, FAAOS, FAOA, serves as the President of AEJ Consulting PC, where his work focuses on orthopaedic sports medicine, human performance, and orthopaedic medical-legal consulting, including independent medical examinations (IME) and utilization review (UR).
Dr. Johnson is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned his MD from UCLA. Following his service as Engineer Brigade Surgeon for the 2nd Infantry Division, he completed his residency at Brooke Army Medical Center (SAUSHEC). He achieved ABOS certification in 2006 and subspecialty certification in 2008. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Association, holding unrestricted medical licenses in Texas and California.
Throughout his career as a U.S. Army Medical Corps officer, Dr. Johnson specialized in caring for service members injured in combat and high-demand, austere environments. He served as the Joint Special Operations Task Force Orthopaedic Surgeon during Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn. He later held leadership roles as Co-President of the U.S. Armed Forces Sports Medical Advisory Board and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at San Antonio Military Medical Center—the largest orthopaedic department and the only Level I trauma center in the Department of Defense. He also served as Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director at Dell Medical School and as Clinical Director of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at UT Health Austin.
Dr. Johnson has held numerous national leadership positions, including Past President of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS), current President of the Texas Orthopaedic Association (TOA), and President-Elect of the West Point Orthopaedic Society (WPOS). His additional leadership roles include Military Co-Chair of the BADER Consortium, Chair of the AAOS Diversity Advisory Board, inaugural orthopaedic surgeon member of the JAMA Surgery Editorial Board, and service on the Major Extremity Trauma & Rehabilitation Consortium (METRC) steering committee.
His academic contributions include more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, 17 visiting professorships, five clinical practice guidelines with appropriate use criteria related to combat trauma, and over $22 million in extramural funding focused on extremity trauma, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and human performance.
Dr. Johnson’s honors include the AAOS Senior Achievement Award, SAUSHEC Gold Headed Cane Award, UCLA Medical Alumni Association Figueroa Award, Dell Medical School Mentorship and Inspiring Faculty Awards, the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals, the Combat Medical Badge, induction into the Order of Military Medical Merit, and the Surgeon General’s “A”-Proficiency Designator.
